Support The Port Foundation & Habitat for Humanity Bring Community Together to Give Community Boys & Girls Club Face Lift

More than 50 volunteers came out Saturday, July 16th to help clean up and upgrade, The Community Boys and Girls Club at 906 Fanning Street with Support The Port Foundation and Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity. The City of Wilmington donated the 906 Fanning Street vacant lot to CBGC a couple of years ago with no upgrades or repairs.  Since CBGC has many responsibilities, they did not have the resources to repair city property.  In an effort to resolve this issue, Support The Port and Habitat For Humanity joined forces to take care of the problem themselves. This location has served as a summer camp program for over 40 young black males, and an after school program for hundreds of children; not only was it essential to help bring this venue up to par, it was obligatory.

All volunteers that joined the efforts went straight to work, grabbing either a rake, broom, trash bag, weed eater, any tool that was available to help develop the CBGC lot.  Breakfast was provided upon arrival and coolers of cold bottled water were stationed around the campus for volunteers to stay hydrated and cool during the community clean up.  Inoperable buses and vans were cleaned out, old furniture was thrown away, grass cut, glass and trash were picked up all around the facility. Volunteers didn’t just have the outside spotless at the end of the community clean up, but the inside was squeaky clean as well.

CBGC also received generous donations such as: flat screen televisions, game consoles, board games, laptops and desktops, and a few more items during Saturday’s community clean up.

The Community Boys & Girls Club is in need of additional donations such as: desks, fans and laptops. You can bring donation items to the Habitat for Humanity Community Resource Center at 3817 Prices Lane Wilmington, NC 28405.

If it is a large donation, call the Community Development Coordinator for Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity, Katrina Harrel at (910) 465-5351 (cell) or (910) 782-8135 (office).
